The Legend of Soccer

The following story is factually, historically, and scientifically proven to be 100% accurate.*

American Soccer, otherwise known as “Football” to the rest of the universe, is well-known to be one of the most popular sports in the world. But did you know that the game is actually a lot older than you think? To discover the true origins of Soccer/Football, we must travel back in time. Back in time to where it all started, 75 million years ago, also known as the “Cretaceous Period.”

Yes you read that right, Soccer as a sport actually originated during the later ages of dinosaurs. More specifically, though, the Cretaceous period introduced the genus mongoliensis to the world, better known as “Velociraptors.”

You see, up to that point, most dinosaur species were still swimming about in lakes and oceans or flying high up in the clouds. The species that actually occupied land during the Jurassic period were usually too colossal and fat-footed to even sprint at a decent pace, let alone kick a ball around.

The velociraptors changed all this. When this new smaller, quicker species was introduced, many of the other dinosaurs feared that these little sharp-toothed thieves would try and steal their eggs for food if they ever let their guard down for even a moment. Needless to say, the dinosaurs were right to be worried, because everyone knows velociraptors are sneaky little jerks.

And so the games began. Every night when the velociraptors would prowl for delicious dino eggs, they discovered that some of the larger species had set up some kind of holding nest to protect their young. These larger dinosaurs would later become known as “Goalies.” But the velociraptors were relentless in their pursuit for a good morning omelet, so every night they would ambush the nests, transporting the eggs via their most useful appendage at the time: Their feet.

Of course all of this would have been forever lost to history if it hadn’t been for Ghilliam Waatfilth, the Scottish time traveler, who recorded all of these strange dinosaur games in his notepad.

After traveling back to his own time, Waatfilth shared his discoveries with his fellow scientists, and the rest is history.
*This is false. The story is completely fabricated for the amusement of the reader.

The Alta Mens soccer team has returned from Dixie, St. George and have won both of their first pre-season games against Dixie and Snow Canyon!  Playing Dixie on March 9th and Snow Canyon March 10th.  This is only the beginning to what could be a spectacular season.  They will take one practice, one game at a time and continue climbing the mountain to the top.  We wish our soccer team good luck with the rest of pre-season.  Region gameplay starts on March 7th at home, so make sure you come and support your high school soccer team!

In a month from now it will have been a year since the Alta Hawks Men’s soccer team began there journey of becoming State Champions.  During the long months of hardships and training, the Hawks were able to achieve something that doesn’t happen often.  This year may be a tough one and the Hawks are going to have to work extremely hard to live up to their previous achievements.  The Soccer team has started conditioning this month and are already working towards the 2012 title.
