What do you get when you combine the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and Led Zeppelin? None other than the incredible rock super-group: Them Crooked Vultures. The group’s members are: Foo Fighters’ front man Dave Grohl on drums and backup vocals, Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme on lead guitar and lead vocals, and the legendary John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin on a plethora of instruments, primarily the bass. When you get such a glorious combination of raw talent and musical prowess, the result is nothing but magic.
The band released their first, self-titled album in 2009. Featuring all original pieces, including their Grammy-winning song, “New Fang,” the album was an instant hit. It’s really like nothing I’ve ever heard. The creative beats and time signatures, combined with the artful lyrics and bluesy/metal melodies, make this a completely new, and completely genius, work of art. Newcomers to taste and culture may not want to dive headfirst into this album, as most songs require a somewhat refined musical palette. But, if you are familiar with what music is actually supposed to sound like, buy this album. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. Music shouldn’t just make you hear, it should make you feel, and there is something about this album that transcends the auditory experience, giving the listener a backstage pass into the minds of three musical geniuses.
